Song(s) of the Week: The Killers, Nickelback & Snow Patrol

This week I’m focusing on songs that serve as the lead singles off of a few highly anticipated new albums coming this Fall/Winter 2008:

Human” is the lead single off of The Killers third studio album, “Day & Age”, which was produced by Stuart Price (Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, Madonna) and is slated for a November 25, 2008 release. Easily the most radio-friendly track that the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum group has ever recorded, I’m sure the band will get some criticism for selling out, but I really like the song. At least it’s a step up from their awful “Sam’s Town” record, and I’m pretty interested to see how the rest of “Day & Age” plays out…

Human” was released to radio stations on September 22, 2008 and was made available for download on September 30, 2008:

Gotta Be Somebody” is the lead single off of Nickelback’s sixth studio album, “Dark Horse”, which was co-produced by the band and Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard) and will hit shelves November 18, 2008. I’m a sucker for modern rock like 3 Doors Down, Theory of a Deadman, Lifehouse, etc., so even though Nickelback is pretty much more of the same, I’m enjoying the heck out of this song and can’t wait for the album to drop…

Gotta Be Somebody” was made available as a free download on September 29, 2008, the same day the song hit radio stations, and is now available for download on iTunes, etc:

Take Back the City” is the lead single off of Snow Patrol’s fifth studio album, “A Hundred Million Suns”, which was produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M., Weezer, Bloc Party) and will be released on October 24, 2008 in Ireland, October 27, 2008 in the UK/Europe and October 28, 2008 in the U.S. To be honest, I’m not really feeling this single, but I love the band and have high hopes for the new record…

Take Back the City” was released to radio in early September and will be made available for purchase as a CD single on October 13, 2008 (Europe):

The Killers are on Saturday Night Live playing "Human" as I write this.

How was the performance? Just curious because I never watch SNL...

You and I have complete opposite tastes. I find the new Killers song to be dull and uninteresting (and I like synthpop) and would pay Nickleback half my salary, annually, if they would just stop recording already. The Snow Patrol song is halfway decent, and I am looking forward to their new album. Their last wasn't as good as the one prior, but I'm still a fan.

Wow. Nickelback. Oofah. I remember when you posted Metallica's new song and I was iffy, but I'm slowly turning and really enjoying Death Magnetic.

Nickelback on the other hand I can't think of a "rock" band that is more not good, to put it lightly.

Well this is really only a small portion of what I listen to ;) On average, I probably listen to 3-5 new albums per day...

As far as Nickelback, I'll be the first to admit that they, and others like them, are nothing more than corporate rock, but everyone has their guilty pleasures ;) Plus, I would much rather listen to them than anyone produced by American Idol, which is probably the worst thing to have ever happened to the music industry...

Rob, yeah the new Metallica was a nice surprise. I'm not sure how much longer they can continue on as a band, but this last record proved there was still some life left in them...
