Legacy is the title of the fifth and newest book in my Deadly
Curiosities series, and it fits the story in so many ways. I love
playing with layered concepts like that, because for me it makes the idea more interesting
when it works on many different levels.
Cassidy
Kincaide, my main character, can read the
history and magic of objects by touching them. She runs Trifles and Folly, an
antique shop that is also a cover for a coalition of mortals and immortals who
save the world from supernatural threats. The store has been in her family for
over 300 years, so that’s the first legacy. Cassidy’s magic is another form of legacy, and we learn more about
who else among her ancestors was also a psychometric, which plays a role in the
current story.
The scions of two dark witch dynasties
deal with the burden/curse of their own heritage. The heir to one family
renounced his magic and refused to inherit the family business because he didn’t
want to accept the demon possession that came with it. Now, he does what he can
to mitigate the harm caused by his ancestors. The other heir embraced his
family’s dark magic, forcing him to take extreme measures to keep his position
and increase his power.
The Lowcountry Museum receives a
surprise inheritance of the land and mansion that had belonged to a reclusive
sea captain from the 1700s. Even more surprising is that the captain bequeathed
a journal to the owners of Trifles and Folly to be delivered when the last of
his direct family no longer lived in the mansion. In accepting that legacy, Cassidy accepts her role in extending
the protective spell of two guardian spirits to protect Charleston and the
coast from disaster.
Cassidy’s ghostly ancestor Dante
plays an active role in the story, since he was a witness to some of the main
historical events that brought about the current situation. And in a subplot,
the tontine set up by five veterans of the Korean War brings to light a goblin
bottle whose last inheritor is dying and which must not be allowed to pass into
the wrong hands.
