I would have put The Broken Eye as the most disappointing of 2014 ... I think as a standalone novel it was really weak and only survived on the success of its two predecessors.

I am very happy with your choices of favorite fantasy and SF of 2014 :-)

I'm a huge fan of Peter F. Hamilton and am very pleased that his Abyss Beyond Dreams is a return to form (although I would argue that Great North Road was not a dip in quality). That being said, my favorite read of 2014 was James SA Corey's Cibola Burn.

On the fantasy side, I think Brent Weeks is simply killing it with his Lightbringer series. (Although I must confess the heft of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive terrifies me so I may be missing a potential fantasy winner.)

Oh, I loved the Long Sword by Christian Cameron, great pick!

Thank you all for the comments!

Regarding Fantasy, there were 2 other books that were really close to The Broken Eye, namely Unholy War by David Hair and The Seal of the Worm by Adrian Tchaikovsky, but for whatever reason the writing style of Brent Weeks resonates the most...

Regarding SF, there was no contest for my top novel of the year - as GNR goes, I think that it all depends about how you feel about police procedurals (which I strongly dislike) as that book has hundreds of pages of that mixed with great space opera the author is known for

As historical fiction goes, both The Long Sword and The Great King were huge favorites and while I tend to prefer Arimnestos era to the 100 Years War period, the fact that the author clearly loves William Gold the most of his heroes, made the difference as this shows very clearly in the book

If you read Spanish though, the Trajan book which is the second in the Trajan trilogy after the excellent Emperor's Assassins - though it can be read fairly independently - is one of those books that immediately jumped on my all time favorites list with the Masters of Rome series
