Spotlight on July 2009 Books

This month Robert Thompson provided most of the book titles with additions by Cindy Hannikman, Liviu Suciu and Mihir Wanchoo. We are featuring 40 books.

Since we have quite a few books and we want to keep the post manageable and easily navigable, so people do not give up halfway through the list, we are doing just covers, titles, links, but no blurbs. Click on any link and you will find more information about the book or the author(s).

The release dates are US unless marked otherwise and the books are first edition unless noted differently. The dates are on a best known basis so they are not guaranteed; same about the edition information.

I keep up with the blog and am especially grateful for your Monthly spotlites which I have been keeping up on for about 6 months now. I just wanted to say keep it up. And I am surprised that this was posted within the first minute of July. Thanks again guys I appreciate your efforts.

Wow, what a pile. At first I was a little disappointed that there wouldn't be any blurbs, but after seeing the number of books, suddenly it makes sense!

Is this just a big month or are there always so many new releases? I try to keep up with genre releases but half of these are totally new to me.

Thanks for putting this together.

(P.S. Love the cover for Eyes Like Stars -- I have no idea what it's about, but I really like that design.)

Regarding numbers - hard to say; last month we had 40 books too, but before, Robert had many books since he tried to be comprehensive, while my philosophy is more to showcase books someone here (including Robert) finds of interest

Regarding blurbs - I think that they do not add enough value overall for the space they take; title, author and cover should be enough to decide if there is interest and then I provided links to a site about the book (usually Amazon for US books) and a site about the author (author' site whenever available) so it's one click away for more details

For myself, whenever I see a book of interest online - review, mention, blurb, whatever - I immediately look for more info on Amazon and author site and I truly appreciate when links are provided rather than having to Google, so I try to replicate here what I find the most useful in my experience

That is an impresssive list. Found it from the Wordpress track back to my blog.

I'm on there. And I'll admit that I'm enough of a geek that I clicked on every single one to see how my Amazon sales rankings stacked up in comparison. :)

Actually, July 2009 is a pretty slow month compared to most months. When I used to do the spotlights, I tried to cover all speculative fiction including YA, urban fantasy, reprints, UK releases, small press, etc, and I'd average over eighty releases per month with some months going over the 100 barrier. This list like Liviu said, is more what we're most looking forward to...

Personally, I like the blurbs myself, but it does make the post a bit long ;)

Oh, regarding The Motley Man, I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the book was pushed back to a 2010 publication...

I was not sure about Motley Man either but it seems an interesting book so at least people can know it's in the plans if delayed...
Amazon still had July 3 as date, but with no preorder...

Regarding ranks, I do not believe any book will beat BHD which is a NYT bestseller almost guaranteed based on past Weber/Safehold history, but I hope that all here will sell well since as mentioned these are books someone at FBC looks forward to.

This works out beautifully as is. I bookmark your monthly book releases. Now I'll take my time just browsing. Much appreciated.

Yeah, I saw that Amazon listing too. The Book Depository has it listed for 2010 though, and I can't even find the book on the Tor UK page, which pretty much means it won't be released any time soon. I don't mind waiting though. Still a ton of 2009 releases to look forward to...

I also must thank you while clicking on your links I discovered www.bookdepository.co.uk free shipping to anywhere in the world is awesome. I was able to pick up Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie without breaking my pocket and it arrived in 4 days to Wisconsin USA for only $19 so sweet.

Motley Man looks interesting as well I'll be following it.

Before BD was launched in 2006 I used to group my Amazon.uk purchases to at least save on the per order fee, but after BD I started buying books from the UK on publication

If you live in the UK and Amazon.uk carries the book, it's probably cheaper, same with US and Amazon, but otherwise (and not only for US buyers of UK books, but for buyers in all the countries BD serves with free sh) it's the best deal around and they are fast - I bought easily 50 books from them in almost 3 years now

I like the new format for the releases, but I do miss the blurbs, although I fully understand the reason for not including them, especially when you cover so many books!

The one I do is for sci-fi only so it's great to see other genres here :) But I'll keep the blurbs on my list!

Thanks for the comments, though I just do the adding of titles :).

At first I was torn between blurbs and just posting this, but the blurbs would time out on me and a lot of times I went based on the cover first.

About Always Forever

I sit at my keyboard typing this out, while a copy of the book sits before my iMac. A copy purchased at the downtown San Diego Borders. I'm up to page 52, and I've read Church's and Ruth's encounter with what appears suspiciously to be Chadbourn's take on Harry Dresden.

So either the July 28th release date is a bit off, or somebody set the book out prematurely.

Smaller publishers (Baen, Pyr, Solaris) release books quite a while before official pub date, even up to a month ahead, so yes I saw the Chadbourn June book (#2) slated for end June, very early in the month and I am sure book 3 will follow the pattern.
