Spotlight on July Books

This month we are featuring 36 books. There are more than twice as many new sff and related releases this month in traditional publishing not to speak of the countless indies from Amazon and Smashwords but we are limiting ourselves to books that will be reviewed here or are similar with such. For the full schedule of July 2012 titles known to us, you can consult the Upcoming Releases page.

The release dates are US unless marked otherwise, though for books released in the UK and US in the same month but on different dates we generally use the US  date and they are first edition unless noted differently. The dates are on a best known basis so they are not guaranteed; same about the edition information.

Since information sometimes is out of date even in the Amazon links we use for listings, books get delayed or sometimes even released earlier, we would truly appreciate if you would send us an email about any listing with incorrect information.

The great Amazon told me that Sharps by K.J. Parker has already shipped my way;) Can't wait for that one!

Well, Sharps is so far my #1 book of the year so I only can hope you will enjoy it as much as I did; just vintage KJ Parker and if you read other stuff from the author, you will recognize a lot here

The other major novel of the month that I have read and as of now is #2 for the year is The Sacrifice Game, badder and crazier and even more unforgettable than In the Courts of the Sun

I do not have yet Jack Glass and Empty Space which I plan to get on their UK publication and expect to be top 25's each

The Prisoner of Heaven is the last major book of the month for me and I started the English language version - read the Spanish one last year.

I read The Wanderers ( good trilogy ending but nothing really new and first volume is still best) and War Maid's Choice (the first Bazhell i really enjoyed but still quite far from the sf Weber)

I have both Broken isles and Queen's Hunt but none really talks to me for now so I will wait for a better moment to try them again,

I plan to take a look at Bitter seeds and Some Kind of Fairy tale but for some reasons neither really excites me that much though they could draw me in once I open them

I looked at vN and Spin the Sky and maybe I will try Spin, though again I have quite a few other books I itch to read and lack time/energy

I plan to read Crown of Usurper as i really liked the first two and a muscular book like I expect this one to be always finds a place in-between darker or more over the top books i tend to prefer.

As the 3rd GW Dahlquist is out I may get to read dark Volume finally (loved the first one but for some reasons never got to the 2nd one) and if i still enjoy the author's brand of over-the-top sort of steampunk, I may read this

Shine, Shine, Shine is the intriguing literary offering of July - though it has some space moments with astronauts so it may have a sfnal flavor...

The Turtledove will get a look over though while I liked book 1 in the series, book 2 was a bit meh as repetitive

As reviews, finally i should do the earlier major books (Corey, Mieville), the Benjamin Wood one from June, a few Michael Cisco (as noted in an earlier post) and the ones mentioned up of course (KJ, D'Amato, Roberts, Harrison...)

And of course surprises as I keep looking for interesting books in bookstores and online

vN looks really interesting to me and I think I might try to pick that one up!

as vN goes, the writing style just did not work for me - at least for now - but of course it may work for you
