Press Releases — Debut Novelist Suzanne McLeod, Reprint of Tim Powers’ “The Stress of Her Regard” + Scott McCloud’s Zot!

PRESS RELEASE: Krystyna Kujawinska, Foreign Rights Director at Orion, has sold the German rights to two contemporary urban fantasy novels by debut author Suzanne McLeod to Nicole Geismann of Goldmann for a significant advance after a hard-fought auction. World rights for the series were acquired by Jo Fletcher at Gollancz from John Jarrold in 2007.

“This is a truly magnificent deal for a debut novelist,” said
John Jarrold. “I couldn’t be happier for Suzanne, or for Gollancz and Goldmann. And many congratulations to Krystyna.”

The Sweet Scent of Blood”, the first book in Suzanne’s Spellcrackers series, will be published in the UK by
Gollancz on September 25, 2008 and is described as follows:

My name is Genny Taylor. I work for Spellcrackers.com. It’s a great job, pays the rent, lets me do the thing I’m good at—finding magic and cracking it—and the bonus is it’s run by witches, which stops the vamps from taking a bite out of me.

Not that vampires are the big bad any more, not since they launched a slick PR campaign—oh, and they brought the goblins on board. Now the vamps are sought-after celebrities, and Getting Fanged and taking the Gift are the new height of all things cool. But only if you’re human. And I’m not. I’m Sidhe fae. And I know firsthand just how deadly a vampire can be
.”

When Mr. October, a sexy calendar pin-up vamp, is accused of murdering his girlfriend, an old debt is called in and Genny is forced to help prove his innocence, risking her job and the protection it offers—and threatening to expose her own dark secrets. Searching for the killer plunges Genny deep into the hidden heart of vampire society. It’s not long before she realizes that she and Mr. October are both unwitting pawns in a centuries-old power struggle between London’s non-human communities—and it’s not just her own neck that’s at stake, but the lives of all London’s supernaturals…

PRESS RELEASE:
Tachyon Publications is proud to announce the August 2008 release of a new edition of Tim Powers' classic novel, “The Stress of Her Regard”.

A novel of secret histories and dark revelations, “
The Stress of Her Regard” is the tale of a terrified young doctor who—after discovering his bride brutally murdered in their wedding bed—allies with the great Romantic poets, Byron, Keats and Shelley in a battle against a malignant apparition seeking her ultimate pleasure in their ravaged bodies and imperiled souls.

Originally published in 1989, “
The Stress of Her Regard” received the World Fantasy, Mythopoeic, and Locus Awards. The book has been out of print since 1994.

While
Tachyon Publications is well-known for publishing new work from some of the biggest and brightest names in fantasy and science fiction, the company also works to preserve in print some of the genre's most beloved classics. Through both innovation and preservation, Tachyon Publications has become one of the most respected publishing houses in speculative fiction.

This new 432 page trade paperback edition of “
The Stress of Her Regard” features an evocative cover by artist Ann Monn, and is affordably priced at $14.95.

PRESS RELEASE: Graphic novel aficionados rejoice! Now for the first time since its original publication in 1984, the black and white comics from
Scott McCloud’s classic series Zot! are being reprised in their entirety. This commemorative compilation marks the first time that these comics are being offered together in one volume. In Zot! The Complete Black and White Collection: 1987-1991 (Harper; Trade Paperback Original; On Sale July 22, 2008; $24.95), McCloud not only includes never-seen-before art, but he also provides extensive commentary about his creative process, his evolution as an artist and the state of the comics industry during this incredibly pivotal period.

McCloud first created Zot! at the age of 23, when both he and the comics world were poised on the threshold of adulthood. In fact, it was this series and its frenetic and innovative exploration of comics’ potential that ultimately helped shape McCloud’s views and set the stage for his ground breaking theoretical works, Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics. Hailed by
Samuel R. Delaney, author of Dark Reflections, as “. . .refreshing, lively, and truly entertaining,” this collection of McCloud’s stories combines the best ideas from Manga, alternative comics and superheroes and in many ways serves as a formal precursor to the wave of American Manga that was to come.

The series follows the adventures of Zachary T. Paleozogt, A.K.A. “Zot”, who lives in “the far-flung future of 1965,” a utopian Earth of world peace, robot butlers and flying cars. When Zot’s travels take him to a world of disappointment and broken promises—the Earth we live in—his one consolation is meeting the lovely Jenny Weaver. Stepping across portals to each other’s world, Zot’s and Jenny’s lives are forever changed.

Celebrated by comics fans throughout the world, McCloud’s books have been published in more than 16 languages. Among his many honors, Scott is the recipient of the Quill Award for Best Graphic Novel in 2007 for Making Comics. The legendary
Will Eisner, has called McCloud’s work “a landmark dissection and intellectual consideration of comics as a valid medium.”

In so far as Zot! is the fictional series that made all subsequent McCloud books on comics theory possible, this commemorative edition deserves a special place on every comic collector’s bookshelf.
