Spotlight on October Books

This month Robert Thompson provided most of the book titles with additions by Cindy Hannikman, Liviu Suciu and Mihir Wanchoo. We are featuring 54 books. This month there were considerably more new sff releases but we tried to limit ourselves to a reasonable number and we chose the books most in tune with what's reviewed here.

The release dates are US unless marked otherwise and the books are first edition unless noted differently. The dates are on a best known basis so they are not guaranteed; same about the edition information. Since information sometimes is out of date even in the Amazon/Book Depository links we use for listings, books get delayed or sometimes even released earlier, we would truly appreciate if you would send us an email about any listing with incorrect information.

Sometimes a cover image is not available at the time of the post and also sometimes covers change unexpectedly so while we generally use the Amazon one when available and cross check with Google Images, the ultimate bookstore cover may be different.

October has several major releases for me: Surface Detail - read and as expected it is my #1 sff of the year so far and unlikely to change, review towards the end of the month, Half Made World, a top 10 fantasy, review on publication date, Passion Play, great debut with a dual review October 6, Voltaire's Calligrapher another excellent book I will review soon, In a Strange Room - very good mainstream novel which I read as a Booker shortlisted one and plan to review too, though I liked Room much more from those 6, Corvus excellent military fantasy and then several books I am now reading and for which I have very high expectations - Skywatcher and Wintertide - and then Behemoth and Version 43 which I plan to read as soon as I get them.

We have already some reviews of the Angry Robot books (City Dreams, Soul Stealers, Servant Underworld)

Other books of interest for me are 1635 Eastern Front about which i heard that it finally gets back the series on track - this one used to be a big time favorite series, but recent books were meandering and took it off the rails - unfortunately it is half a volume only and I will most likely read it only when I get its second half (scheduled march 2011 - 1635 Saxon Uprising) and then Cryoburn which as a Miles story it should have been a big asap, but the chapters I read are very meh and the book looks like a repeat of the mediocre Diplomatic Immunity, so it dropped on my pile

Congratulations on being on the Cybils panel. It looks like you won't find all the reading hard at all.

Thanks :). Between all my October reads I want to read and then the Cybils I'll be busy busy :)

Not many books for me this month, particularly with the Angry Robot ones since I already have the UK version.

Really looking forward to Side Jobs. I also won Passion Play in a giveaway, so that should be arriving soon. I'm keeping my eye on The Half-Made World, but I'll wait for the time being.

Kill the Dead I'm also very much looking forward to, but going to wait till it becomes more affordable.

A lot of books coming out on November 1st that I'm interested in, but we'll wait until then.

I hope to see more people giving City of Dreams & Nightmare a chance now that it's coming out in the US.

I agree completely about City Dreams; I am keeping an eye for the e-arc of the sequel, though it moved to early 2011.

Half-Made World is an excellent novel - right now as 2010 novels go I ranked it (on Goodreads) at #10 sff and #8 fantasy for me in a very, very strong year in fantasy - though that can change of course - it is steampunk new weird

There were a bunch of UF from names even I heard of - so I guess they are kind of known in the subgenre - that I cut from the big list from Robert, so maybe those will be of interest also

Shotgun Sorceress by Lucy A. Snyder seems to be the only additional UF of interest to me, just noticed that it's an October title rather than a November one.

There's also The Road to Bedlam by Mike Shevdon, but I already got the UK version from September and already read.

Very much interested in The Half-Made World, but considering that I don't plan on reading it soon, I'll wait till it becomes more affordable. And with Bookdepository suddenly not providing the great prices they used to provide for pre-orders, I'm starting to tighten up a bit for the time being.

I guess worth noting would be the Maria Lima 4th installment in her Blood Lines series and Grave Witch by Kalayna Price seems to be getting some positive reviews among UF readers, but not interested in them for the time being.

Most of my anticipated UF came out last month.

And yeah, just noticed City of Dreams & Nightmare being pushed back a month.
