“Fablewood” edited by William Ward. Release Date: February 20, 2008. The Fablewood Anthology is a collection of short stories designed to reintroduce the magic of fantasy to comics. Fantasy as a genre is frequently presented and celebrated as tales of sword and sorcery, with epic heroes, diabolic villains, and terrifying monsters. Magic is not just spells and wizards, however—it can also refer to a feeling, an experience, or even a single panel on a page.
The Fablewood Anthology presents an amazing collection of stories that are inspired by fantasy and strive to restore a sense of magic and wonder to the genre by capturing the hearts and imaginations of readers of all ages. The anthology offers a range of stories, from a tale featuring the Greek hero Achilles, to a child searching for his dead parents, to a shadow striving for the impossible dream of seeing the sun! The anthology format allows creators to tell a broad range of stories with a wealth of themes and moods, from Lovecraftian-inspired horror to the bumbling-protagonist humor, and from the dark stranger on a lonely road mystery to tug-at-the-heart romance. Quality stories combined with compelling art can create a magical experience for readers, and this is the goal at the heart of this collection.
The Fablewood Anthology boasts an impressive and diverse roster of contributors, including fiction authors, webcomic creators, Eisner nominees, and established comic industry professionals. The list of talented up-and-comers include Ryan Ottley (Invincible, Superman / Batman Annual #1), Manny Trembley (Panda Xpress, Sam Noir: Samurai Detective), Joe Infunari (Oni Talent Search, Borrowed Time), J.P. Ahonen and Sarah Mensinga (Flight 4), Chris Studabaker (Howard E. Day Prize Nominee), Kevin Crossley (Event Horizon), Axel Machain (Metal Hurlant), Joe Suitor (Popgun Anthology) and more. Further information about select creators can be found HERE.
Presented by the devoted team at Ape Entertainment, the Fablewood Anthology has support and enthusiasm from top to bottom, with everyone sharing the same goal of offering a unique reading experience for both seasoned fans of fantasy and the casual comics reader.
To purchase the Fablewood Anthology, you can either order it online through Amazon.com or Ape Entertainment, or find it at your Local Comic Book Store.
Excerpt from Ursula K. Le Guin article, “Some Books I Liked”:
“Finally, an anthology edited by William Ward, Fablewood (Ape Entertainment, 2008.) I just received this book from the editor. Twenty-three or four artists and writers, living in the US, Canada, Finland, worked on these thirteen graphic tales, some only a page or two, some longer. The art styles are extremely various, and so are the subjects, though they all have a fantasy or fabulous element. It’s a contained explosion of visual imagination — really exhilarating. Some of the pieces work better than others, some are difficult, but none of them is inept or stupid, and some are stunners. I think my favorite is a wordless four-pager by Sarah Mensinga called Fish.” —Ursula K. Le Guin, award-winning author of The Earthsea Cycle and The Left Hand of Darkness (Read the full article HERE)
