OVERLOOKED TITLES: "The Good Thief", "The Hunger Games", "Slow Storm", Etc...

The Good Thief” by Hannah Tinti. UK Release Date: July 10, 2008. Published by Headline Review. US Release Date: August 26, 2008. Published by The Dial Press.

Richly imagined, gothically spooky, and replete with the ingenious storytelling ability of a born novelist, “The Good Thief” introduces one of the most appealing young heroes in contemporary fiction and ratifies Hannah Tinti as one of our most exciting new talents…

Twelve year-old Ren is missing his left hand. How it was lost is a mystery that Ren has been trying to solve for his entire life, as well as who his parents are, and why he was abandoned as an infant at Saint Anthony’s Orphanage for boys. He longs for a family to call his own and is terrified of the day he will be sent alone into the world.

But then a young man named Benjamin Nab appears, claiming to be Ren’s long-lost brother, and his convincing tale of how Ren lost his hand and his parents persuades the monks at the orphanage to release the boy and to give Ren some hope. But is Benjamin really who he says he is? Journeying through a New England of whaling towns and meadowed farmlands, Ren is introduced to a vibrant world of hardscrabble adventure filled with outrageous scam artists, grave robbers, and petty thieves. If he stays, Ren becomes one of them. If he goes, he’s lost once again. As Ren begins to find clues to his hidden parentage he comes to suspect that Benjamin not only holds the key to his future, but to his past as well…

Hannah Tinti has written a lightning strike of a novel—beautiful and haunting and ever so bright. She is a 21st century Robert Louis Stevenson, an adventuress who lays bare her character's hearts with a precision and a fearlessness that will leave you shaken.” —
Junot Díaz, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critic’s Circle Award for The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

The Good Thief is a magical book. Everything worth writing about is in it: love, death and—more than anything else—family. I wish I'd written it.” —

The First Escape” by G.P. Taylor. Release Date: August 20, 2008. Published by
SaltRiver.

From the best-selling author of the Shadowmancer books and Mariah Mundi comes an enthralling new series of illustra-novellas. “The First Escape” is the first book in The Dopple Ganger Chronicles, a six-book series following three children—Sadie & Saskia Dopple and Erik Morrissey Ganger.

At Isambard Dunstan’s School for Wayward Children, life is trouble for 14-year-old identical twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple and their friend, former thief Erik Morrisey Ganger. But what starts out as a perfectly normal day of food fights, rioting classmates, fires, and (yawn) threats of expulsion goes suddenly and horribly wrong when a mysterious, wealthy woman appears at the school and adopts Saskia . . . without her sister.

On her own in a mansion full of dark secrets, Saskia stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens her very life. Meanwhile, in a desperate attempt to find her, Sadie and Erik escape from the orphanage with a gang of enemies in hot pursuit. Faced with madmen, wild dogs, treasure seekers, and an otherworldly visitor with a secret message, the trio must decide who to trust—and what to believe—if they are to survive long enough to find each other again…

This book is in an exciting new format called an “illustra-novella,” in which the story is told alternately in graphic novel format and plain text with occasional illustrations. Features collaborations with
Tony Lee (Marvel Comics, Shadowmancer), Dan Boultwood, and Harry Potter artist Cliff Wright.

Icarus at the Edge of Time” by Brian Greene. Release Date: September 2, 2008. Published by
Knopf.

From one of America's leading physicists, “Icarus at the Edge of Time” is a moving and visually stunning futuristic reimagining of the Icarus fable written for kids and those journeying with them toward a deeper appreciation of the cosmos. With a minimum of words set on 34 full color boardbook pages, Icarus travels not to the sun, but to a black hole, and in so doing poignantly dramatizes one of Einstein's greatest insights.

Unlike anything Brian Greene (The Elegant Universe, The Fabric of the Cosmos) has previously written, “Icarus at the Edge of Time” uses the power of story, not pedagogy, to communicate viscerally one small part of the strange reality that has emerged from modern physics. Designed by Chip Kidd, with spectacular images from the Hubble Space Telescope, it's a short story that speaks to curiosity and wisdom in a universe we've only begun to fathom…
