Winners of the Brandon Sanderson & Matthew Stover Giveaways + Misc. News (The Talisman Comic Book Adaptation, the Pitch Black tour, etc.)
Congratulations to Don Dyer (Missouri) who was randomly selected to win a SET of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy including copies of “The Final Empire” (Paperback), “The Well of Ascension” (Paperback) and “The Hero of Ages”, all thanks to Tor!!! “The Hero of Ages” officially comes out today and you can find more information on the book HERE.
Congratulations also to Chuck Graham (Alabama), Ruth Ann Francis (Texas), and Millicent Cagle (Tennessee) who were all randomly selected to win a SET of Matthew Stover’s “Heroes Die” and “Caine Black Knife” thanks to Del Rey!!! “Caine Black Knife”, the third book in The Acts of Caine series after “Heroes Die” and the out-of-print “Blade of Tyshalle”—and the first book in the Act of Atonement sequence—is also official out today. For more information on the series, please read Fantasy Book Critic’s reviews of Heroes Die, Blade of Tyshalle and Caine Black Knife.
In news, just a few tidbits:
PRESS RELEASE: Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, announced October 13, 2008, the acquisition of the comic book and graphic novel rights to “The Talisman” by Stephen King and Peter Straub. The creative team on the project will be announced soon, and the first issue of the monthly comic is planned for late summer/early fall 2009.
Originally published in 1984, “The Talisman” is the story of a young teen named Jack Sawyer, who can save his dying mother only by retrieving a magical talisman. To find it he must cross back and forth between our world and the frightening and dangerous landscape of its “twinner” counterpart. The hardcover edition, published by Viking, spent twelve weeks in the #1 slot on the New York Times list. Both “The Talisman” and its sequel, “Black House”, are in print with Ballantine Books. Television rights to “The Talisman” are under development by Steven Spielberg (Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park) and Kathleen Kennedy (The Sixth Sense, War of the Worlds).
“Illustrating The Talisman in the depth that it deserves will involve at least 24 issues of comics, probably more,” said Del Rey Editor in Chief, Betsy Mitchell, who acquired the project from agent Ralph Vicinanza. “It’s a tremendously visual story, filled with images that burn in memory long after the book has been closed.”
King’s Dark Tower comics consistently inhabit the top of the comic book sales charts, and his recent series, Dark Tower: Long Road Home was the top-selling comic book in North America in March 2008.
NOTE: I enjoyed “The Talisman” enough that I bought the sequel, but it’s not a book that I would reread. I am interested to see how the comic book adaptation turns out though, although a lot will depend on the creative team chosen…
In other news, authors Joe R. Lansdale, Kage Baker and Rudy Rucker, along with Richard Bottoms, CEO of SteamPowered Events, Inc., were present for a special Steampunk-themed Litquake reading at the Variety Preview Room of San Francisco on October 9th. The event was organized as part of “SF in SF”, a series of monthly science fiction readings organized by author Terry Bisson and sponsored by Tachyon Publications, publishers of the Steampunk anthology.
Lansdale read from his novel “Flaming London” and Rucker read from his novel “The Hollow Earth”. Baker read from a steampunk-inspired short story to be published in an upcoming anthology and Bottoms spoke on the steampunk genre. Pictures from the event can be found HERE.
