GIVEAWAY: Win an ADVANCE READING COPY of Guy Gavriel Kay’s “River of Stars”!!!

Order “River of StarsHERE

In his critically acclaimed novel Under Heaven, Guy Gavriel Kay told a vivid and powerful story inspired by China’s Tang Dynasty. Now, the internationally bestselling and multiple award-winning author revisits that land four centuries later with an epic of prideful emperors, battling courtiers, bandits and soldiers, nomadic invasions, and a woman battling in her own way, to find a new place for women in the world—a world inspired this time by the glittering, decadent Song Dynasty:

Ren Daiyan was still just a boy when he took the lives of seven men while guarding an imperial magistrate of Kitai. That moment on a lonely road changed his life—in entirely unexpected ways, sending him into the forests of Kitai among the outlaws. From there he emerges years later—and his life changes again, dramatically, as he circles towards the court and emperor, while war approaches Kitai from the north.

Lin Shan is the daughter of a scholar, his beloved only child. Educated by him in ways young women never are, gifted as a songwriter and calligrapher, she finds herself living a life suspended between two worlds. Her intelligence captivates an emperor—and alienates women at the court. But when her father’s life is endangered by the savage politics of the day, Shan must act in ways no woman ever has.

In an empire divided by bitter factions circling an exquisitely cultured emperor who loves his gardens and his art far more than the burdens of governing, dramatic events on the northern steppe alter the balance of power in the world, leading to events no one could have foretold, under the river of stars…

Guy Gavriel Kay’s work has been described as “elegant, sweeping and colorful” (San Francisco Chronicle), “resonant and powerful” (Washington Post Book World), and “wonderfully imaginative” (Publishers Weekly). A #1 bestseller in Canada and an international award-winning author, Kay has often blurred the lines of genre. Like A.S. Byatt who conceives of fantasy as an alternative to—rather than an escape from—everyday life, Kay uses elements of the fantastic to examine themes of history. River of Stars is a grand-scale, emotionally compelling work that evokes a magnificent period through vividly realized characters.

This sucks man!! Only for north americans? Us international readers find it very difficult to get books from our favourite SFF authors. And most of the e-books on amazon aren't downloadable from here, so we have to order in hardcopies from The US with shipping rates far exceeding the price of the book itself. People like GGK just don't publish in smashwords. so, we would sincerely appreciate it if future giveaways are open globally

Hi Darkest Lord. I understand your disappointment. Unfortunately, the ARC is for the North American version of "River of Stars" which is published by Penguin Group (the UK version is published by HarperCollins), and since the book will be provided/shipped not by FBC, but by Wunderkind PR, there are, sadly, restrictions.

The only time we can open giveaways to everyone is if we're shipping the books ourselves, or the publisher is willing to ship worldwide, which is rarely the case. So our apologies, and we'll try and do better in the future...

23I know some people will get insulted, but I just can't understand why people insist on calling the stuff that this guy writes fantasy. His first couple of books were fantasy, and everything after was something pretending to be fantasy.

what would you call alt history with a little magic?
it may not be secondary world fantasy sure but fantasy is a much larger field than that
